Windows on dementia
“I am still me.” That’s the heartfelt call from people with dementia.
We want the same rights and privileges as everyone else and most of all – to know our lives matter.
I know this because I have dementia.
And I have just helped to develop a Dementia Declaration that makes our voices heard. At last.
Along with some ‘real life’ research just completed by Alzheimers NZ, this gives New Zealanders a ‘window on dementia’ and what it’s really like to live with this condition.
It’s a journey full of highs and lows – a true rollercoaster – but one that is different for every single person with dementia. Because we are all different.
Please take a few moments to open these windows and hear the voices of people with dementia and their care partners.
These are all voices of people living with dementia – taken from the This is Our Story research project, commissioned by Alzheimers NZ.
They provide a window on dementia in New Zealand.
We would like to acknowledge their bravery in speaking out and all the other people who participated in this landmark research project.

Our voices will help to shape how society responds to our needs. What services and support we want and how we’d still like to have some choices in our lives.
The next step is to turn the voices of people with dementia into the actions we truly want to see.
