Total Mobility

Life without a car…

The thought of life without a car can be difficult to comprehend, and for people with dementia there will likely come a time when they’re no longer able to drive. For some, being told they cannot drive is more upsetting for them, than the actual diagnosis of dementia.

We understand how difficult this time can be for you and your family and are here to support you through this.

There are a number of supports we can help connect you with to help you to maintain your independence and freedom

Total Mobility is a nationwide scheme to help provide transport for people who, due to a long-term impairment, cannot use public transport easily. Eligible people use an electronic card to receive subsidised fares, currently 75% discount, (with approved Total Mobility transport operators) to help them access appropriate transport to meet their daily needs and enhance their community participation. The scheme is funded in partnership with local and central government in New Zealand (Environment Canterbury and Waka Kotahi).

The card can be used with Timaru Taxis, Driving Miss Daisy, or the Geraldine and Waimate Vehicle Trust.

Safety First!

Sometimes as a persons dementia progresses, they may experience changes which make keeping them safe within the community more difficult.   An example of this is a person who ‘walks with purpose’ (previously known as ‘wandering’).    Generally walking is good for our wellbeing, but when a person may be at risk of getting lost or having difficulty finding their way home – this can become a scary time for families to navigate.

If you are supporting a person with dementia and are concerned about managing their safety within the community with ‘walking with purpose’ please feel free to contact our friendly team for advice:
